Campaign: Because of Them We Can

Take a look at this amazing photo campaign entitled “Because of Them We Can,” where kids are styled to embody great African American figures in history. The idea originally started out as an idea for Black History Month, then evolved into an ongoing project.

Photographer Eunique J. Gibson realized that only doing 28 installments just wouldn’t be enough, and continued her work everyday for a full year. Gibson has started a Kickstarter to fund her campaign and turn it into a book. She hopes to raise $80,000 by mid June, and has so far raised a little over $9,000. Enjoy!!

I love this. They can do a whole series with this. I'm sure we can see a Malcolm, Mandela, Oprah, Denzel ,etc. one being done. What i really like about this is there are no athletes or musicians in this. Just showing there's more to us than what dominates the media.

I love this.  I want to get this for myself. I want a print of this. These would be so great if people could order them and have them framed. Imagine these hanging in a barbershop, Dr.'s office or some place else.

Kasey Durham, there's an entire collection of Black people in this photographer's, Because of Them We Can by Eunique Jones series. It's a year's worth of work which includes Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Jr., and so many other notable figures and people that may not be as noted as the others. It's definitely worth checking out.

Adorable! Regardless of the choice of brothas and sistahs they portrayed the message is well received. Good post!

For some reason when black actors take on roles, we treat them like they have a social responsibility to take on historical or solely positive roles. They aren't martyrs, they're artists. Some people decide to be both, some people end up being both. The fun of navigating character and being an actor is the exploration of humanity in it's every facet. Everyone has bad thoughts, irresponsible thoughts etc and some act on them. That's the beauty of OP. Kerry gets all of this flack for taking on the role, meanwhile Michael C. Hall can be a serial killer/cop on Dexter and be fine.

Idk if you'll read but these are just a few of many photos that make this wonderful photo campaign. SN:: I could have sworn we were referring to the person not the character they get paid to play. Stop knocking people because you are simply ignorant to their accomplishments. Worry about what you can do to inspire and better us.

Can think of others much more deserving than this group. In fact I think some shown have been detrimental to our country.

It says Kerry Washington, not Olivia Pope. Learn the difference.

I'm sorry but to the Kerry haters - when's the last time you saw a black woman staring on a TV show that lasted more then 2 seasons? She does more then act. Check her credentials. And the point of her name being mentioned in the campaign. Is for the "life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness." Stop being so close minded and open your eyes. #progressinanyformisstillastep

why kerry washington? is it because her character sleeps with a powerful white man (the president), the primary selling point of the show? while this has good intent and the kids are adorable, we are still confused as to what 'progress' means.
