South Korea’s Beauty Queen Controversy

South Korea’s Miss Korea beauty pageant has sparked a lot of attention over the past few days. When photos came out of the top 20 contestants, many were shocked to find that the women’s resemblance to each other was nearly identical!

Since the similarities seem far too calculated to be purely a coincidence, it has been speculated that the pageant is directly reflective of the country’s stereotyped, idealized sense of beauty, and the pressure that women feel to meet up to this ideal. This is evident in the statistics that show South Korea has the highest rate of cosmetic surgery out of every nation. Twenty percent of the female population have gone under the knife for some sort of procedure.

Take a look at the side by side photos of a few of the contestants below, as well as a grid of all 20, and let us know your thoughts!

What is the point? You should be appreciated for who you are not how you look!! If I was blind and deaf, how would I know, or care, that my partner was a black Chinese woman??

  28. Nor Rosner April 30, 2013 Reply

I really don’t what you ladies are seeing but I am seeing totally different looking women (with the exception of appxly 3). Their faces are by no means cosmetic looking. Their looks are a part of their ethnic distinction…all asian women share these similar features. It’s just like any other race. There are certain characteristics that distingush them from other races. Nothing to it.

    Creepy they’re like robots

  31. Waynetta Mosley Rogers April 30, 2013 Reply

These are clearly different people, but I did read an article not too long ago discussing the rise in what some consider to be extreme cosmetic surgery. Shaving down the bone on the forehead and making the chin more pointed for a heart shape look. Also read an article about a husband filing for divorce from his wife because of fraud! Claimed she tricked him with all the plastic surgery and he doesn’t want kiddies with the woman!

Leaguer mains look at the hair colors though. Each a little different tone of brown

  33. Plum Cherry April 30, 2013 Reply

  34. Shekita Kita Donner April 30, 2013 Reply

It’s not plastic surgery, young Korean women just have similar features.

  35. Alexandro Aldama April 30, 2013 Reply
