When I came across this beautiful young lady, Kris of The Kris Bliss, I immediately wanted to know more. Something about her just drew me. I feel like she needs to be sitting in a rocking chair writing and speaking words of wisdom. She looks like she could be a Maya Angelou.
Maybe I’m just writing my own script?!. She could be the next Oprah. Alright, let me stop. I adore her style. I like her vibe. Get to know Kris. Enjoy the interview.. xo
Name: Kristin M. Brooks
Occupation: Musician/Songwriter, Hostess
Single or Married: Single
Where are you from: I’m from a lot of places. I was born in Philly… I have lived in Chicago, Houston, Greenville (MS), and am currently residing in Bethlehem, PA
What do you love most about your city:
There’s something I’ve taken from every place I’ve lived, but what I love most about Bethlehem is its simplicity. It’s such a historic, suburban town, and although I complain that everything closes by 9p.m., I can’t ever complain about being able to see a sky full of stars each night, the beautiful open green fields, or seeing a pack of deer randomly chilling in my backyard. That’s pretty cool to me.
What inspires your style and how would you describe it:
That’s a great question. What inspires my style… I really love street style, I think it’s so unique and organic; I try to be as effortless as possible when creating an outfit. I’m also inspired by high fashion, but we all know everything is inspired and imitated by the greats… I really love the 70’s era and the 90’s too, but I’m not sure if either is directly reflected in my style. I would describe my style as comfortable and classic. I try to make a twist on conservative pieces, and accessorize with my jewelry and hairstyles. I try to keep it fun and non-stuffy lol
How do you decide your outfit for the day:
It usually has to do with the weather and my mood. When it’s yucky outside, all I want to do is throw on an oversized sweater, leggings, and comfy boots. When it’s nice and sunny, that’s when I’m colorful and vibrant!
Vintage or latest trend:
Definitely Vintage. Trends come and go, but good clothing lasts forever.
Any Style Icons (dead or alive):
Solange, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Michael Jackson.
How do people respond to your style:
People usually love what I wear, and usually say things like “Wow, I would’ve never paired this with that” or “Wow, that’s cool how you did that!” I don’t think I do anything too out of the box, but I have my moments I guess lol
Favorite fashion quote:
“This… stuff’? Oh. Okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select… I don’t know… that lumpy blue sweater, for instance because you’re trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue, it’s not turquoise. It’s not lapis. It’s actually cerulean. And you’re also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves Saint Laurent… wasn’t it who showed cerulean military jackets? I think we need a jacket here. And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. And then it, uh, filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic Casual Corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you’re wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room from a pile of stuff.” –Excerpt from The Devil Wears Prada
What are you into this season:
Gladiator/Metal-type pieces of jewelry. Structural, chunky, pieces that aren’t necessarily practical.
Favorite piece in your closet:
Any piece from my unethical collection of vintage sequined clothing.
Stella McCartney, DVF, Rachel Roy, Alexandar Wang, Marchesa, Jason Wu… Too many to name!
Favorite stores or brands:
French Connection, H&M, Forever 21, Macy’s, Topshop, ASOS, LA Vintage (I’m a big online shopper).
Random: What’s in your purse:
I actually don’t carry purses, only wallets and clutches (the smaller the better). Since there is a limited space I of course have my credits cards, on a good day, some cash as well, my C.O. Bigelow lip gloss, oil-absorbing pads (can’t be walkin around with a shiny T-Zone), and of course my iPhone!
What’s on your playlist:
Kanye, Adele, Beyonce, Clifford Brown, Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughan, Frank Ocean, Daft Punk, Maxwell, John Mayer…
Fashion is an abstract thing that it so hard to define. I guess just like with music, it’s not just about the sound or the look, it’s the lifestyle that goes along with it. It’s a mix of your personality, confidence, and what you’re standing for by visually representing that particular piece of art worn on your body. It’s an inspiring and necessary ideal that everyone takes part in, whether they realize it or not.
Pink and Green. But I think that happened because my mother has been an active AKA since before I was born, and I had no choice but to love those colors. They’re great colors!
Your dream job:
To have my own PR company that represents musicians, visual artists, designers, and everything in between! I would love to be a contributing editor to a fashion or music magazine, and to be writing music for mainstream artists on my off time haha.
Pointy|Square|Round toe shoes:
I prefer round.
Favorite Shoe Brand:
Ugg. JUST KIDDING! I like Nina Ricci a lot.
When and why did you start blogging:
I started The Kris Bliss on the last day of October of last year (about 5 months ago), and I started blogging because I wanted an outlet to express myself. I needed a place to discuss my ideas and opinions, and I wanted also to showcase my style and my day-to-day occurrences!
Who takes all of your pictures:
My lovely best friend Sasha Phyars-Burgess.
Tell us three random things about you (that we don’t know):
1. Up until a few days ago, I’ve never played Scrabble. Well, I still haven’t actually physically played Scrabble, but I have been getting whooped in the “Words with Friends” app by everyone I match. I know a lot of words, I just don’t understand the points system (loser).
2. I am a creature of habit and could eat the same thing everyday for a very long period of time. I was one of those people who got mad when I would go to class and someone would be sitting in “my seat.”
3. I danced ballet, tap, and jazz for 10 years before deciding music was my passion. Not too many people know that about me.
